THE WORLD WIDE WEB
If you've read about the Internet lately, you've probably seen some mention of
the World Wide Web. It has been featured in the daily newspapers, in magazines, on
television and of course in the computer industry press. The World Wide Web (or just
simply the Web) is drawing people and organisations to the Internet faster than ever
before.
The World Wide Web is the multimedia aspect to the Internet. On the Web, information is presented in colour and graphical format. There is even the possibility of downloading video and audio clips on the Web. It is easy to use, visually appealing and rich in information. During the last year the growth of information on the Web has been phenomenal, increasing by over 2,000%.
You are accessing the Web at the moment so already you will be familiar with some of its features. When you started the Web Browser, you accessed WindsorNET's website. From the homepage you came into the Getting Started page and from there into the World Wide Web page. Navigating around is as easy as pointing and clicking on graphics and keywords. From one page you can follow a link to another page by clicking on the graphic or highlighted keyword. The web browser (the program you use to explore the Web) will automatically load the new page and present it for your viewing. It doesn't matter where each of the pages are stored. This page, for example, is stored on WindsorNET's server whereas other pages may have links to pages stored on servers in the around the world..
Given the links from one page to another, navigation couldn't be easier. As you browse through information, and move from page to page, you will be connecting to many different servers all over the world.
If you are looking for specific information on the Web, you should use one of the Internet service directories. These directories will allow you to search by using keywords or categories. On our Navigation page we have listed the largest and most popular Internet directory services. By clicking on any one of them you will access the directory and can then continue to do your search. Have a go - you'll be amazed at how easy it is!
